Location

Mauritius is a tropical island situated in the Indian Ocean about 2,400km from the south east coast of Africa. It has 330km of coastline almost entirely surrounded by coral reefs, a great central plateau and picturesque mountains.

Climate

Air temperature on the coast varies from 19^oC in winter to 31^oC in the summer. Water temperature ranges from 22^oC to 27^oC. Like all tropical islands, there are no well-defined rainy and dry seasons. The island is lush green, and colourful vegetation abounds throughout the year.

Constitution

Mauritius is a democratic Republic within the British Commonwealth and the constitution is based on the Westminster pattern.

Economy

The economy is based on agriculture, textiles, light manufacturing and tourism. Mauritius has introduced offshore banking and the creation of a Stock Exchange is a milestone in the development of a modern capital market on the island.

Population

It numbers just over one million consisting of Hindus, Muslims, Chinese, Creoles and Europeans.

Entry requirements

A valid passport and a return ticket to the point of departure or onward destination.

Visas

Nationals of USA, and the European Union do not require a visa. All other nationalities, please consult your travel agent.

Health

Yellow fever and cholera vaccination certificates are required if arriving from infected areas.

Currency

The monetary unit is the Mauritian rupee which is divided into 100 cents. Major credit cards and travelers cheques are widely accepted in hotels and main shops.

Language

English and French are currently used. Creole, Hindi and other oriental languages are also spoken. Main hotels and travel agencies employ staff speaking German, Italian and Spanish for the convenience of guests.

Time

Mauritius time is 4 hours ahead of UTC and 3 hours ahead of mid-European time.

Pets

Introduction of dogs and cats are not recommended as they have to undergo a 6 months quarantine.
