LocationMauritius is a tropical island situated in the Indian Ocean about 2,400km from the south east coast of Africa. It has 330km of coastline almost entirely surrounded by coral reefs, a great central plateau and picturesque mountains. EconomyThe economy is based on agriculture, textiles, light manufacturing and tourism. PopulationIt numbers just over one million consisting of Hindus, Muslims, Chinese, Creoles and Europeans. Entry requirementsA valid passport and a return ticket to the point of departure or onward destination. VisasNationals of USA, and the European Union do not require a visa. All other nationalities, please consult your travel agent. HealthYellow fever and cholera vaccination certificates are required if arriving from infected areas. CurrencyThe monetary unit is the Mauritian rupee which is divided into 100 cents. Major credit cards and travelers cheques are widely accepted in hotels and main shops. LanguageEnglish and French are currently used. Creole, Hindi and other oriental languages are also spoken. Main hotels and travel agencies employ staff speaking German, Italian and Spanish for the convenience of guests. TimeMauritius time is 4 hours ahead of UTC and 3 hours ahead of mid-European time.
